JPG uses lossy compression, so very heavy compression can soften fine detail. PNG is lossless and can carry transparency. For relief work the difference is minor — the converter handles both — but a high-quality JPG gives the best result.
One practical note: a JPG has no alpha channel, so the converter identifies the background from the image edges (the same-color region around the subject) rather than from transparency.
